Legend of Hotel Pricing, Hotel Types, and Rooms

Although the list of hotels is by no means a complete list of hotels in Costa Rica, we have hand-selected some of the better hotels. Try not to focus on pricing as much as location, because when you call us we're going to work within your budget. Pricing is included on this site only to give you a feel for what is out there. Our agents are very experienced in the specifics about each hotel, and if you have questions, call us toll-free!

Notes

  • Pricing is checked every season on all hotels
  • Pricing is usually for double occupancy, unless stated otherwise

Description of Pricing & factors affecting it

•$• = $75~100

These hotels are usually just about the cheapest accommodations you can get. Often these hotels are in remote locations, and the cost is in getting there. Some have group accommodations available.

•$$• = $100~150   Moderate accommodations with a small number of amenities; usually a pool, perhaps a bar and close to local nightlife, if there is any.
•$$$• = $150~$250   Now you're getting into the truly luxurious hotels, with manicured gardens and a list of local activities, amenities, and restaurants. Some are located in the center of the action for that particular region, and other times that little extra money puts you in a smaller, more romantic hotel.
•$$$$• = $250 +   Very high-end smaller accommodations with large rooms. They are usually more secluded. Many attach unlimited usages, like spa treatments or adventure tours. Sometimes the high-end all-inclusive resorts fall into this category, with everything, and we mean everything, included.
•$$$$$•

If you have to ask...

These are either single homes in remote locations backdropped by jungle heaven, or very, very high-end small exclusive resorts. Call for pricing.

Descriptions of Hotel Rooms

  • Single/Double/Triple/Quad - These rooms take 1-4 people who can share the financial burden. Some are common rooms with enough room for beds, with a small kitchenette for cooking. If you're on a shoe-string budget with a group of friends, or a couple looking for economy rooms, this is the right choice. Superior/Deluxe rooms are a touch nicer.
  • Studio - These are single accommodations (you don't share) but very small. They usually have a single room (except bathroom), with a 'living zone' where they put the bed, kitchen, and slider to a common deck of some kind. Shared amenities (like pool and jacuzzi).
  • Rancho - Perhaps a better description would be a 'ranchito' - but really, this is just a villa or bungalow; this is derived from 'country house'
  • Villa / Bungalow - Usually a detached small house with some 'perimeter' between you and the rest of the world. Accommodations might not be luxurious, but they are more private and multiple rooms. Sometimes they have their own jacuzzi and luxury stuff like that.
  • Suite - These are usually good-sized rooms with luxury amenities, but a common building. Junior suites are smaller than the average suite, Master/Honeymoon/Primo suites are more luxurious, larger, and more luxurious furnishings.
  • Condos/Apartments/Vacation Rentals - These are usually rented out by the week or month, for extended visits to Costa Rica. The longer you stay, the less expensive it is. They're just like condos in your home town.

Description of Hotel Types

1. Featured Hotels

With so many hotels available throughout Costa Rica, it may be difficult to choose the place that is just right for you. We present to you several featured properties to make your decision a little easier. All of the featured hotels have proven themselves to be outstanding options in quality and service for previous clients and therefore, we highly recommend that you take a look. Some are small, remote, and romantic, others are luxurious and offer all the amenities.

Note that there is a strong overlap between boutique and featured hotels, so check both sections for a list of the most unique, interesting hotels in Costa Rica.

2. All-Inclusive Hotels

These hotels are the ultimate in luxury travel stops. All meals are included. They have all the amenities; pool, jacuzzi, cleaning services, in room tv, lobby entertainment, room service, easy access to sports activities like golfing, tennis, snorkeling, and more. These hotels are often family friendly.

Note that there is a strong overlap between all-inclusive and family hotels, though there are some all-inclusive hotels that are adult only.

3. Romantic Getaways / Weddings / Honeymooners

Obviously, these are more 'remote', private getaways that cater to newlyweds, honeymooners and wedding groups. They sometimes have limited capacity for large groups, but often will work with local areas to 'expand' their seating and hosting capabilities. Consider these Romantic hotels where newlyweds would stay for their honeymoon. Note that almost all hotels can accommodate weddings, but that these hotels have that extra something special.

4. Boutique

Boutique properties are generally smaller hotels, with a very unique, Costa Rican flavor which only adds to the experience in making this vacation truly unforgettable. Click on any or all of the following options and contact us if you have any questions or are interested in booking.

5. Cultural

These hotels have some special significance for both Costa Ricans and travelers alike. Often, these hotels exemplify the Pura Vida attitude or have cultural tours that start here.

6. Golfing

Golfing hotels either have an on-site golf course or are close to one or many golf courses in the area.

7. Family

These hotels cater to families of all sizes and child ages, with larger rooms, and a wide variety of restaurant menu choices (for those finicky eaters). They often provide many activities that are kiddo-oriented as well.

8. Fishing

These hotels have various package deals for sportfishing, and usually have boat transport available to nearby islands or deep sea.

9. Scuba Diving

Without a doubt, Costa Rica is a world-class diving destination. The variety of locations, temperate to warm water, two oceans, and abundance marine life create an exciting diving vacation. These hotels cater to divers of all levels.

10. Surfing

These hotels are located next to some of the finest surfing beaches in the world. Often they are mere meters from the beach, offering 'out the front door' surfing. Fun nightlife, great happy hours, and a surfer atmosphere are the dominant tones. These are not beach shacks! In fact, some of the hotels below are very upscale.

11. Eco-Friendly Green Hotels

Costa Ricans are as a whole more ecologically aware. For years the government and its people have succeeded in keeping Costa Rica environmentally pristine, slowing development and sustaining natural habitats. These hotels are all 'eco-friendly'; they have numerous tours that cater to the natural beauty of the land, and of raising environmental awareness.

12. Vacation Rentals

For those looking for an extended stay in Costa Rica, this list of hotels, apartments and condos fits the bill. Many have daily, weekly, and monthly rates at considerable discounts. Many are located close to a variety of restaurants and things to do.

13. Luxury Hotels
