Introduction

Costa Rica literally means 'Rich Coast' in Spanish. Archaeologists know that civilization existed for thousands of years in Costa Rica before the arrival of Columbus (yes, THAT Columbus). Numerous artifacts found on the west coast (including spherical balls called bolas) made of granite, ranging from the size of your hand to the size of a Volkswagen bus!

Recently, ruins of an ancient city near San José has been found, and jade and gold work was being produced as far as a millennia ago. Mexican Olmec and Nahuatl civilizations may have played a part in the development of these ancient communities.
